One of the main reasons behind this dissatisfaction was the Jailer’s manufactured importance, where World of Warcraft players felt the writers tried to retroactively paint the Jailer as having played a leading role in several defining moments of the Warcraft universe. The personality of the Jailer was ultimately not interesting enough to stand by itself, and his machinations deprived several villains of their agency to prop up his own legitimacy.

In a moment of accidental (but no less brilliant) coincidence, the Jailer once again found himself somewhere where he didn’t quite belong. Throne of Thunder, one of the best World of Warcraft raids of all time, seems to have an inexplicable bug where the former Arbiter of the Shadowlands keeps spawning in the basement of the Thunder King. He seems to repeat phrases such “Yield to the inevitable,” and “Your soul is mine,” while towering above the player in an intimidating fashion, yet otherwise remains untargetable, unresponsive, and non-interactive.
The bug was spotted by Amongog, who shared their discovery with World of Warcraft’s Reddit community. It would seem that outside of meeting the Jailer in the blood laboratories of Lei Shen – no doubt looking for the wrong type of Anima – Amongog’s game started to mysteriously freeze, forcing Amongog to exit the application several times through Alt+F4 even after leaving the Throne of Thunder.
A potential answer as to what produced this outcome might lie in Questionable Mawshrooms. Eating them causes players to experience strange hallucinations in any Shadowlands zone, and one possible outcome is to have the Jailer appear with vague threats before leaving through a Darkmoon Faire portal. Bearing this in mind, and taking into account that Amongog admits to perhaps eating the mushrooms to clear some inventory space, this bizarre bug may well just be chalked down to a cosmically bad trip.
Given that the Questionable Mawshrooms aren’t supposed to work outside Shadowlands zones, it would seem that Throne of Thunder somehow managed to evade the item’s filter. Whether it’s ultimately a bug or an unexpected feature, one cannot say – but the fix should be easy to implement.
