HBO Max’s Black Canary project was confirmed to be in the works a little while back, with Jurnee Smollett returning as the titular character after her DC Extended Universe (DCEU) debut in the Birds of Prey film, which saw a more effective take on the famous vocally enhanced superhero crime-fighter. The character ranked among fan favorites and many were asking for Black Canary to get a spin-off project.

During the aforementioned Q&A, Green was asked, “Do you like biker jackets and fishnets?,” which was likely a reference to the classic comic book look that Black Canary used to rock. It serves as her iconic look in a lot of media, including games, television shows, and animated movies. The writer responded with, “LOVE biker jackets and fishnets,” which was accompanied by a “winking” emoji. So, fans are now suspecting viewers will get to see Black Canary don her classic DC costume in the HBO Max film. Keep in mind this doesn’t count as an official confirmation, although it is compelling. The Black Canary film will follow the titular character after the events of Birds of Prey and may even delve more into her past in order to provide more insight into the character’s perspective. It may also make some tie-in to the character’s DC lore and keep the comic book or video game references going.

The Black Canary project is also expected to do well due to the pairing of Green and Smollett, who have worked together before and delivered stellar writing, directing, and of course, acting each time. With the pair’s involvement in the Black Canary project, this film may rank among DC’s greatest features.

Many are expecting Oliver Queen/Green Arrow to make an appearance in this project. For those who don’t know, Green Arrow and Black Canary are often seen as a couple or duo in the DC canon. While that would be a nice addition, Black Canary doesn’t need Green Arrow in order to do well. If he appears, it would be better off as a nice cameo or appearance at the end, but fans aren’t looking for the archer to take the spotlight.

Black Canary is already an underutilized character, so this would be the perfect time to give her a fanbase that doesn’t come with attachments to other heroes. It’s likely that other characters will populate this project, but it won’t be a disservice as long as they don’t take away from the lead character.

Black Canary is currently in development.
